As you complete Challenges, you'll build a meter that will allow you to use Hammers to break a challenge without having to actually complete it, letting you get the rewards - however some Challenges must be completed and cannot be broken.
For a list of Challenges and what they unlock, see the lists below by category - unbreakable challenges are marked in purple. You can also view guides for some of the harder challenges at the bottom of the page.

Challenges Guide
Having trouble taking on some of the tougher challenges? Get some help with these guides!
As an important note: Unless the challenge specifically states you must win against a CPU opponent, many challenges can be won against another player - even if that player isn't doing anything.
- Challenge - Beat a Level 9 CPU in a 2-player battle without spirits or handicaps.
advertisement
There are a few Smash Challenges that involve these parameters - whether beating them with 2 stock remaining, or by at least 3 points, or in Stamina mode. The most important thing about these challenges is that it does not specify who your opponent must be, or who you need to play as. Because of this, we recommend picking a character you are good at, and then train against different level 9 opponents until you find a character that you can counter more easily than others.
For example - a character with a built in counter, like Ike or Marth, may have an easier time baiting a level 9 opponent who favors close range attacks. On the other hand, someone like Fox or Ness may find it easier against opponents they can reflect or absorb projectiles, like Samus. Once you find that opponent, train against them until you are able to anticipate the moves they will use, and then try to fight them using the parameters that will unlock the chosen challenge.
- Challenge - Beat a Level 5 CPU in a 2-player battle. You must have a 300% handicap, the CPU must have a 0% handicap, and spirits must be off.
This challenge sounds more intimidating than it is. While its true that having a 300% handicap is a big deal, you still get to choose who your opponent is, and more importantly where you fight. This means you can have a 1v1 stock match and wait at the edge of a stage like the Wii Fit Studio or Mushroom Kingdom 2, and bait your opponent into attacking - shield - and then grab and toss them into the blast zone.
- Challenges - Awaken all Fighters and Win all battles in Adventure Mode
These challenges may be time-consuming, but certainly do-able, even if some Spirits and Captive Fighters may be hiding in hard to reach places. Be sure to see our Guide to the World of Light Adventure Mode for the locations of all Spirits and Fighters, and how to find and unlock them.
- Win against Legend Class Spirits
If your having trouble taking on Legend tier Spirits on the Spirit Board, you'll want to have the right gear. You'll likely want to get a Legend tier Spirit yourself before challenging another one, and if you can't beat one in the Adventure Mode, you can also sometimes find them for sale in the shops in Adventure Mode. You can also make sure they've been trained to the fullest extent, and use the right Items to weaken a potential conflict by checking the parameters beforehand.

- Clear Classic Mode on 9.9 Intensity
Unfortunately there's no real trick to clearing Classic Mode other than learning how to play your chosen fighter well, and getting better at the matchups presented. Luckily - every fighter's Classic Mode path is unique, so you can keep training against the encounters presented and slowly raise the difficulty over time. Remember that each win will raise the intensity a bit, and even more if you have a perfect or near-perfect match. Find a character you're good with, but also make sure their matchups seem reasonable - if you have trouble against multiple opponents, try to find a fighter who only has fights against single foes.
- Play Cruel Smash, and KO 3 Opponents
A recurring challenge from previous iterations, and one of the hardest ones, surviving Cruel Smash while also KO'ing at least 3 enemies can be very frustrating. Luckily, the Mii fighters in Cruel Smash are still notoriously bad with ledges, and have trouble effectively edge-guarding, or using recoveries once the fall off the stage. You can use this to your advantage by using a fighter with a good recovery special and repeatedly falling off the side of the stage and recovering back to grip the ledge, then either fall back down or jump to the side to goad them into chasing you. If you spot a fighter jumping down below you, try jumping off them as a footstool to send them into free-fall. Certain fighters like Kirby or Ike can have an easy time KO'ing fighters who linger near the ledge by repeatedly using their recovery special to slam down on opponents and send them falling down - just be sure you're always in reach of the stage.
